The first day of December

So it is now December. Calendars have been turned over to reveal a final, snow-draped scene. The first Advent chocolates have finally been consumed. Three weeks left of school before the holiday. Christmas lists have been made - in one case, "version 1.0" has emerged, beautifully turquoise, from a computer in an ordered collection, containing this gem:

Christmas came early for me today, in the shape of an idyllic lunch away from the office with Karen - who arrived bearing two review copies, one of The Minds Eye by Hakan Nesser (appropriately wintery cover), and the other of A Lonely Place by Mari Jungstedt (a rather similar cover which you can imagine as being wintery if you squint at it). Thanks, Karen! I hope your journey home was pleasant and that the train was driven carefully;-)

The book is "an 'academic mystery': that is, the crime takes place in a university department (a student is murdered), and the solution depends on the uncovering and understanding of the victim's research, as well as of the broader mores, religion and witchcraft in medieval Europe. Yet the book is by no means heavy-going; the opposite in fact. LAST RITUALS is an assured novel, ably translated by the late Bernard Scudder. I recommend it very highly." Everybody's e-reading or e-listening Many libraries in the UK are planning to increase their e-books collections in 2009, according to a recent survey by OCLC (the online computer library centre). Almost all (85%) of public libraries that responded expressed an interest in developing a fiction e-book collection, even though most usage of e-books so far has been of research and reference titles. (And 65 % of respondents are planning to increase their e-audio book collections.) According to an Outsell industry report on the survey, this response is puzzling because so far in the UK, most interest in the e-book format has been in reference works and textbooks. Although the Sony e-reader has been so successful in the UK that you can't get one for about a year, and the Amazon Kindle has yet to be sold here, various digital publishers are quoted as being excited about the mobile format -- which means that people will not have to buy a dedicated e-reader.
