Via The Great Beyond: "The Archaeological Institute of America has elected Harrison Ford to its board of directors, on the basis that he has “played a significant role in stimulating the public's interest in archaeological exploration”.We expect to shortly to have it confirmed that the American Mathematical Society is electing Matt Damon, that Jude Law and Ethan Hawke are being recruited as senior advisers to the National Human Genome Research Institute and that the American Institute of Mining and NASA are jointly honouring Bruce Willis."
What have Charles Darwin and Yoko Ono got in common? Both get my vote, for one thing. Talking of votes, I did not think the US elections would ever feature on this blog, but I love this story about McCain, Bush, Arianna (Stassinopolous) (Levin) Huffington and deniability. Interesting that I've never thought much of the Huffington Post (for example its disgraceful promotion of the autism and vaccines non-story), but in contrast with the Times view, I think that Arianna comes out of this one a lot better than McCain (or his "people", at any rate).
Moving hastily to books, James Long writes at the Digitalist: "I’ve been following the One Laptop Per Child project with great interest and was thrilled when the first pictures of the XO laptop were released," writes James. "The design was so clever, robust and practical and I thought at the time, really, you couldn’t do much better. Since then, things have not all gone the right way for OLPC and the XO." The XO2 is set to change all that, thinks James. (Breaking news, you can now see what James and his colleagues look like. A very photogenic lot.)
If you want to vote for the "best of the non Bookers", please go to Me and My Big Mouth (Scott Pack's blog) where there is an online poll for the shortlist of ten books. There are some good ones there: one standout for me, but you may feel differently.
