Workshop on popular science books

"We are looking for contributors for a one-day event on popular science books to be held at Imperial College, London on 22nd Feb 2008. Literary critics, historians, writers, illustrators, publishers, prize-givers, reviewers, readers, booksellers, teachers (and others) are all invited to take part. Contributors will be asked introduce a book, collection, theme, or popular science author, perhaps with a small extract, and use it to raise a topic for discussion in or about popular science."

"If you are interested in contributing, please send us an outline of your presentation (500 words maximum) and a short bio (approx 200 words). The outline should list the source(s) you want to discuss, and preview the discussion topic your session would raise. Email this to [email protected] by the 23rd November 2007." The Janissary Tree Last week I received a reading recommendation from an old friend: the person who was the main source of my crime fiction reading from the mid-1980s to mid-1990s, via her generous loans of the books which she buys regularly. Her recommendation is The Janissary Tree, by Jason Goodwin. (Link goes to UK Amazon.) I haven't read or bought it (yet), but it looks pretty good. Is this the end? Typepad keeps sending me emails saying that my credit card payment has been denied. There is no reason for this, nothing has changed about my status and my credit card statement is in an admirable position ;-). I suppose that there is nothing I can do if Typepad decides to delete my blog, that's it, I am gone. They don't seem interested in my telling them that my payment has gone through every month since 2006 (including October 2007) and there is no reason why things have changed now. I shall be devastated if they unfairly pull the plug on me, but there you go, I am in the hands of forces outside my control. If you come here tomorrow and see no Petrona, you will know that some major meltdown has occurred between Typepad and Mastercard, in which I am a mere splinter in the maelstrom. It was nice knowing you.
