Authors' choice books for Christmas

It's a Crime! (or a mystery...): Books for Christmas.

Well, to pinch a lovely phrase from Peter Temple, it is Satdee arvo -- and I don't have much to write, so am glad to see that CrimeFicReader has spared me the trouble by the spiffing news she conveys at the link above. She's persuaded several super crime fic authors to provide their recommendations for books to read for Christmas, and will be drip-feeding us with the results on It's a Crime in the second half of November. Can't wait. Watch out for the red stocking logo to identify said recommendations, she tells us.

While I am here, don't forget the Sunday Salon tomorrow. See you there, I hope.

Thanks for the link, Maxine. I shall commence with the "stockinged" posts next Friday (16 November).

As is usual for writers in this genre, the response has been more than generous. (Crimeficcers make the most wonderfully generous creatures on planet earth.)

In this email Dr Cox implored them to write about a tale of “treatment of some academic colleagues by what seems like a kind of ‘climate change mafia’”. Sunday Salon: conveying characters I'm currently reading Black Tide by Peter Temple, the second of his Jack Irish series. (See here for my short review of the first, Bad Debts.) Here are two paragraphs from page 126, character sketches of a married couple whom Jack has just met as part of his investigation: "We sat in the huge fenestrated space, the house expensive beyond dreams, servants waiting somewhere, a beautiful woman, dresser of hair, a hardness to her mouth, fibro house in Broadmeadows floating out there in her past, sweet, sad memories of a patch of dying lawn, a father and a mother and a little girl. Arms around each other. Below us, a rich man, thin, all body fat dissolved, was pushing himself: against water, against age, against the inability to sleep unless exhausted." I don't know if these people will appear again in the book, but I love the way Peter Temple instantly fixes them and their lives in the reader's mind with such economy and poetry.
