Euro Crime's top 2006 reads

Now if I were a well-organised, up-to-date person I would have included the information in this post in my post of the other day rounding-up good crime fiction reads from 2006. I had got so behind withe everything, though, that I thought I'd never post my Christmas holiday "starred items" in Google reader if I kept distracting myself by reading new posts on blogs, so I posted my round-up.

Now I read that Karen at Euro Crime has published the "top 5 or so" reads of 2006 from her reviewers -- including me. So please head on over to the Euro Crime website, which is a great resource if you like this kind of fiction, and pick up some good suggestions, together with links to the reviews where they exist.

Karen M from Euro Crime

One of my unspoken resolutions is to read at least one of their books this year. Sooner rather than later would be nice. I also like the fact that they are a nice size for carrying in one's backpack!
ps can I mention there's a new competition for UK residents on Euro Crime....Denise Mina's latest book... :-)

Books post-free to Australia Link: It's a Crime - The Book Depository - Postage Free to Australia. Karen at It's a Crime has found that the Book Depository offers free postage to Australia. How they can offer this service at the price they charge for their books, I don't know, but as UK to Australia is about as far as you can get, I thought I'd mention it here in case the organisation now ships free to anywhere else. And in another piece of detective work, Dovegreyreader scribbles notes here that Mark Thwaite of Ready Steady Book also runs the BritLitBlog network and the Book Depository. The world just is too small; no wonder they can afford the postage to Australia.

Not returning, but plodding In perhaps the most controversial book-related post over Christmas, Susan Hill opined that there are too many bookshops. She'd cut their number in half. Why? Because so few books are read, and because of "returns", which she sees as a great evil. Well, there may indeed be "too many" bookshops in the UK. The stock in bookshops has a low price per unit and is hence expensive to keep if it doesn't sell. However, the "answer", as I boringly keep saying, is print on demand. Here is a post by Martyn Daniels (on 2 Jan) at the Booksellers Association blog about PLOD --print locally on demand. The Espresso print machine, says Mr Daniels, can print, cut and bind up to 20 books in an hour. At New York City library, it will provide copies of out-of-copyright books at $3 each. (See my Petrona post of 21 Dec on this technology.) Knowledgeable authors of various websites and blogs have predicted that 2007 will be the year in which POD takes off as a "mainstream proposition".
