Oodles of Google doodles

The guy who draws those Google logos has written a blog post (see above). He's open to suggestions. As he says: "when a user writes in to suggest that we honor the once-every-122-years Transit of Venus on our home page, we actually do it!"

There are links in his post to the archive of very lovely Google logos.

Not about the Google guy but noticed your comment on Marie's. Your photograph is fine. You are a lovely lady. Besides you are a writer and writers are ageless and live forever.

Thanks for this Maxine, I'm always intrigued when google has a doodle. It must be quite a powerful advertisement for anniversaries and events.

Thanks for this, Maxine. I have always wondered who does the Google logos. I think the logos are brilliant, and they are always a talking point in our office. We all loved the Evard Munch one the other day!!

If you are confused about FaceBook, MySpace, YouTube et al., you could do a lot worse than read the above post, which explains all. Martyn Daniels asks when there is going to be a geriatric version of one of these sites. That's a good question, which makes business sense. For one thing, it is quite boring reading articles with headlines like "91-year-old man is top on YouTube" -- yeah, yeah, we all know that people who have been round the block a few times are actually quite interesting. And for another, the sedate and silver haired amongst us have plenty of money and (if retired) plenty of time for a bit of networking while we look for outlets on which to spend our ill-gotten gains, or pensions. So I look forward to a Web 2.0 sharing site especially catering for the cultured, erudite and otherwise mature interests of the Petrona generation.

Breaking out of the stereotype Via Confessions of an Idosyncratic Mind , I have just read an essay by author Scarlett Thomas on becoming a published novelist, the compromises she had to make with the publishing company, and how she escaped. "At the moment, I am actually being allowed to write the books I want to write, which is something many women never get to do. In an industry that can write off the whole literary output of entire nations in two seconds (Chinese books, for example, are 'so last year'), this is pretty good going. I am not selling very many books but people do read them. And I have the kinds of fans I always wanted: men as well as women, lots of students, people who like ideas. I try to use the fact that I have ‘escaped’ to talk about what’s wrong with publishing.." I think the essay is a very honest and clear account, though not comforting or comfortable.
