Diversity in the blogosphere

"Simon Owens has posted the results of his survey of diversity in the blogosphere at his site Bloggasm.

Here are the results for the blogosphere as a whole:

Male: 69%
Female: 31%

Black/African: 9%
Asian: 10%
Middle Eastern/Arab: 1%
Latino/Hispanic: 6%
Native American: 1%"

Interesting as ever, Maxine. Thanks!
But his results are based on a fairly small sample ie just those who replied out of the 1000 he contacted. It could be they represent the ones who reply to things like this as opposed to the whole blogosphere!
Of course this is always the problem with surveys, stats etc ...

See what you mean, Debi. He had a sample size of 1000 and 300 responses, so a good response rate for a survey, but a very small sample size and probably all his friends. I agree that you can't say anything from that. The Pew surveys are probably more representative, I took one once -- biased towards the US, but that is where most blogs seem to be -- those written in English anyway.

Spotting fake science Link: Amy On The Web » Blog Archive » How To Tell If The Science Is Fake. Amy links to a post that sure hits the mark, "the seven warning signs of bogus science". Now I look at her link, I think I have read Robert Park's list before, but had forgotten it, being a creature of no memory. As well as the extracts Amy highlights, here is one that is spot-on: "7. The discoverer must propose new laws of nature to explain an observation. A new law of nature, invoked to explain some extraordinary result, must not conflict with what is already known. If we must change existing laws of nature or propose new laws to account for an observation, it is almost certainly wrong." It is amazing how many people submit work to scientific journals under "clause 7".

Good things come in threes Three great new (to me) crime fiction blogs. Detectives without borders ("because murder is more fun away from home") has an interesting perspective on the David Montgomery "10 best crime books" challenge. Interesting not least because I haven't read any of the selections, which causes me to raise an eyebrow at myself. I found this blog courtesy of Frank Wilson of Books, Inq. -- it is written by a colleague of Frank's. The other two discoveries come by way of Euro Crime (a lovely blog originally discovered via Its a crime!): International Noir Fiction --"reviews and ideas on crime fiction, most outside the US". Lots of great reviews by Glenn Harper, who has even done me the honour of visiting Petrona -- thanks, Glenn. And Crime Scraps -- " a few comments and thoughts about crime books set on the mainland of Europe, with titbits about real eurocrime. We hear constantly about crime in the USA that many people imagine Europe is a crime-free zone". (I know, the grammar!) Crime Scraps has some interesting postings but falls foul of Blogging 101 -- does not allow comments. Huh! All three of these blogs exclude the USA crime fiction in their mission...
