Traffic police in Taiwan closed a busy motorway this week to make way for migrating butterflies. Drivers on the elevated section of freeway no. 3 were warned to expect delays owing to the annual migration of 1,000,000 purple-spotted butterflies, whose path runs across the motorway. At one point, more than 11,000 butterflies were crossing the road every minute. Ultraviolet lights have been installed beneath the elevated section, to encourage the insects to fly underneath.

Two schoolgirls from New Zealand have humbled one of the world's biggest food companies, after their science experiment proved that ready-to-drink Ribena in New Zealand contains almost no trace of vitamin C. Anna Devathasan and Jenny Suo disproved the advertising claim that "the blackcurrants in Ribena have four times the vitamin C of oranges". They got short shrift from makers GlaxoSmithKline, but a government watchdog backed their findings, and GSK is now facing 15 charges related to false advertising.
